SHARE YOUR MUSIC - May Performance Group Classes (01 May 2012)

In the odd-numbered months, we offer Performance Group Classes for all students at a few different days and times - just register for one and come. These classes last 30-60 minutes depending on the number of students registered. Classes are no additional charge.

These classes are available in locations where The Music Lessons Company has a studio or approved facility for this group class. You are welcome to call us to confirm the location in your area.

What should you do to prepare?

Bring 1 song to play, and play either an excerpt or entire piece that is well-prepared. This could mean even just the right hand of a piece, but it should be something that the student can get through well.

Songs do not need to be from memory, but certainly may be.

What do we do in the class?

Students learn how to walk up on stage, perform with their instrument and bow. Children in the audience also learn how to be a good audience, which is something that takes some practice, as well!

We encourage everyone, regardless of how the performance goes. This is a positive atmosphere for the students. This is based on the Suzuki philosophy of encouraging students to perform and share their music with others.

Students are able to listen to other students who are less and more advanced than they. This provides the opportunity to see where their music can take them, and also remind them of how far they have come.

When necessary, the teacher may coach or assist the student.

When there is time, we may play additional games or do activities related to theory, ensemble playing, styles of music, music history and other music-related areas.

What are the benefits of this class?

Students learn how to handle themselves on stage which helps prepare them for recitals, talent shows at school and other performance opportunities.

The nerves that come with performing can be slowly worked out, so that students feel more comfortable sharing their music in front of others.

For the business world, feeling comfortable in front of an audience is vital. These are skills that students can carry in to adulthood and their professional lives!

Students are able to hear students who are more and less advanced than they are, encouraging students to see what they can achieve and what they have already accomplished.

Social aspects of any activity are important, and this class offers an opportunity for kids to meet other students. For those who wish to do duets or ensemble activities, this can be helpful.

      Who can come?

Parents and families are welcome to attend to sit in the audience.

Students of any level, instrument or age may participate.

      Other notes:

This is not a recital. Students may wear comfortable attire, and there are not any programs, certificates or other formal items handed out.

Students should bring their instrument (we provide a grand piano), music and accessories. We provide music stands and seating.

The class will be 30-60 minutes depending on the number of students. If you are dropping off a student, please assume that the class will be over in 30 minutes.

There may be 1-15 students in the class, depending on the time of day and how many students participate. Even if there is only 1 child, we will still have the class.

All students are welcome to participate in our spring recitals! Whether a student is 3 or 83, a beginner or an artist level performer, we want you to have the opportunity to Share Your Music with others.

IMPORTANT: If a student is performing on multiple instruments, such as piano and voice, you must register twice. You may add the student as a guest and submit the guest registration as the second instrument. 1 registration = 1 instrument, 1 registration w/ a guest = 2 instruments.

FEES: Springs recitals are available at no charge this year. However, there is a fee if you would like a certificate, trophy or plaque. In addition, if a student is registered for a recital (taking a space someone else could have) and does not show up, there will be a $25 no-show fee charged to the student's account. Please do not register for the recital if you do not plan to attend.

ELIGIBILITY: Students must be registered for lessons for the month in which the recital occurs. The student's account must be current as of the date of the recital in order to participate in the performance.

PARKING & UNLOADING: Parking at the studio will fill quickly. Please feel free to park in any space after 5pm, or in the parking lot in front of the strip mall near Powell Road. Please do not block any entrance/exit, or park where you see a yellow curb. Parking behind the building (north) is for employees. The handicapped entrance is on the northwest corner of the building, at 46 Village Pointe Dr. You may also use the handicapped entrance if you need to load in a lot of equipment.

PROGRAM INFORMATION: The songs to be performed and the song order must be confirmed with the teacher at least two (2) weeks before the date of the recital so that the programs may be created correctly. However, this information is not due at the time of registration. Beginners should perform no more than 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 pieces. Intermediate students should perform no more than 2 minutes and a maximum of 2 pieces. Advanced students should perform no more than 3 minutes and a maximum of 2 pieces. We reserve the right to edit a student's program submissions to meet these guidelines.

ARRIVAL: Students must be at the recital hall 30-45 minutes before the start of the recital. Doors will open for seating 10-15 minutes before the start of the program. We will ask parents, families and other attendees not performing to please wait in the lobby until we open the doors.

RECITAL ETIQUETTE: Flash photography is not permitted, but photography (video/still) is certainly allowed. Please, no young children whenever possible as their "singing along" frequently distracts the students performing. Students performing should be dressed in their Sunday Best, and should avoid tennis shoes, short skirts, tight clothing, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and casual attire. Soloists should perform by memory whenever possible. Students performing in ensembles (duets, etc.) may use their music. We will have one (1) microphone available for vocalists and other instrumentalists who may need it.

Please call 614.413.7676 x2 for all changes/requests.

FULL RECITALS: Recital registration is limited to provide for seating and a reasonable recital length. If you are unable to register for the date of the recital you need, please select another recital date. Should you have any questions please call us at 614.413.7676. While we cannot go over the limit, we can see if perhaps there are duplicate registrations or any errors preventing the recital from being open to registrations.

RECEPTION: We will have a small reception following the recital. We will inform you of the location at least one (1) week in advance.
